Bridge originally constructed in 1800's as a railway bridge, later converted to roadway. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the Civil War, and damaged during a 1924 flood, until it was swept away in 1936. It was never rebuilt. In this photo, railroad bridge and tunnel on left, destroyed bridge in center. Waiting cars visible on far shore.
