Attached: "161035FC - COPYRIGHT COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC INFORMATION, FROM UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD, N.Y. RELEASED OCT, 31, 1917." GREAT CAPTIVE DIRIGIBLES USED BY FRENCH FOR OBSERVATION. One of the great captive French dirigibles used for observation of the movement of the enemy. These dirigibles are connected by wire with a post below and the findings are either phoned or telegraphed down. Usually the wire is let out from an apparatus similar in many ways to the fishing reel. The wire can move in radius with the ballon. The photo shows one of the dirigibles about to be off. The flights are short, usually. The photo was taken "somewhere on the French front." 10/31/17."
